Casa Luce in San Lorenzo is located in the spacious Piazza del Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo, in the heart of Florence. It is within 5 minutes walking distance from the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery of San Giovanni, and within 10 minutes walking distance from the Uffizi, Piazza della Signoria and Ponte Vecchio.

The apartment is very near to Michelangelo's Medici Chapels, the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Medici Library, the Riccardian Library and the Marucellian Library.

The Cappelle Medicee (Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini, 0552388602, open: first, third and fifth Sun of every month: 8:15am - 5pm, weekdays: 8:15am - 5pm, closed first and third Mon of every month).

The chapel is an adjunct of the greater church, the Basilica di San Lorenzo (Piazza S. Lorenzo, 0552645184, open Sun from March to Oct: 1:30 - 5:30pm, weekdays: 10am - 5:30pm.)

Florence's Gothic cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, is best known as the Duomo (Piazza del Duomo, 0552302885, Sun: 1:30 - 4:45pm, Weekdays: 10am - 5pm, Thurs: 10am - 4:30pm, Sat: 10am - 4:45 pm, first Sat of month: 10am - 3:30pm).

Eating Right in Piazza del Mercato Centrale there are many restaurants and trattorias where you can eat.

During the mild season it is pleasant to eat at the outside tables.

We would be pleased to give you information and our suggestions on the ones we prefer. For grocery shopping nothing is better than the typical colored banks of fruit, vegetables, fresh bread, milk, meat and cheese located inside the nineteenth century building of the Mercato Centrale, right in front of you. (Mon-Sat 7am-2pm, Sat 4pm-8pm).

There is plenty of fresh produce, cured meat, and local cheese to be sampled and purchased from a variety of vendors.

You can also consider that in Via Ginori there is a market which is open everyday until 7:00 p.m., even on Sunday.

Parking facilities:

For visitors arriving by car it is important to know that the center of Florence, which is divided into two sectors, allows only limited traffic; only those drivers who have permits may enter, circulate freely and park on the streets.

The historical centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL): access is prohibited to non residents' vehicles from Monday to Friday 7:30am - 7:30pm and on Saturdays 7:30am - 6:00 pm. Outside these hours everyone may drive and park in the center. During the summer time there are some further restrictions at night.

The access to ZTL is controlled by electronic detection devices that register the plate number and fine non authorized vehicles. However at the beginning of the access to ZTL there is a special traffic light that inform if the access is allowed or not.

Once entered in the city centre during the off limits time you must park into garages. There are many gargeges in Florence. especially in the San Lorenzo and Station area. The average garage price per day for a medium-sized auto is 25 Euros.

However, I strongly suggest that you not arrive in Florence with a car, unless you are returning a hired car. The train station, Santa Maria Novella, is centrally located, as are the main bus companies. Lucca, Pisa, Siena, Rome and Venice have good train connections to Florence, which is located in the center of Italy and is an excellent base for all excursions.

If you've rented a car to move around Tuscany and plan to visit Florence for a day, it is best to leave your car in one of the many car parks that surround the historical center and avoid entering the ZTL area. Below is a link to the main garages in Florence, you can see their locations on the map: http://en.parkopedia.it/parking/firenze/

IMPORTANT NOTICE about the Floor numbers:

When an Italian apartment is described as being on the first floor, it is on what would be called the second floor in standard American terminology. In Italy we start from the level zero or ground floor. In the offerings of Florence & Tuscany, "ground floor" means that there are no steps to climb (unless otherwise indicated). In the offerings of Florence & Tuscany, "first floor" doesn't mean one flight stairs, but indicates the location of the apartment in relation to building.
